#19 – Affogato, eh? Give me a break!

Double espresso pulled straight on a KitKat ice cream bar to partially melt the chocolate shell and allow the ice cream to slowly seep out. Sprinkled with house-made maple oat streusel for a crunchy contrast. Pick up the ice cream bar to eat and dip, or use the stick to stir everything together to enjoy. Decaf espresso is available upon request.

🇨🇦 Why Canadian? In 1957, Rowntree employee Donald Gilles created the iconic marketing phrase, “Have a break…have a Kit Kat,” solidifying the chocolate bar as an International symbol for a pause in the day. Today, the new owners, Nestlé, custom-make various flavours to suit the cultural tastes of different countries. For Canada, they launched such special editions as “Kit Kat Chunky Rolo” (a mashup of two Canadian favourites – Kit Kat and Rolo caramels – into one bar). Apparently, American Kit Kat fans used to make runs over the border just to bag this exclusive version, not available in the U.S. 🍁

🇨🇦 Why Canadian? This feature turns an ubiquitous iced latte into a matter of national pride by prominently showcasing the most Canadian ingredient … you guessed it …Maple Syrup! (As well as Canada-grown oats made into gluten-free certified oat milk). It’s easy to take Maple Syrup for granted, but it has a secret history worthy of a crime thriller. In 2011, a group of thieves siphoned millions of pounds of syrup from a reserve in Quebec and filled the emptied barrels back up with water. The culprits in the “Great Maple Syrup Heist” were eventually caught and sent to prison, where they now only get GMO corn syrup for their pancakes. 🍁
